Toyota Motors once again has started bookings for its popular sports utility vehicle in India, Fortuner. The booking was stopped in the month of August 2010 due to large number of backlog. It was because during that month, the company received a booking of 3004 units taking the total order backlog crossing 6,000 units.
Toyota Fortuner saw unprecedented response from the Indian customers when it was initially launched in 2009 and has created an impressive backlog for the company since then. Toyota hoped to clear the Fortuner backlog by the end of the year 2010, and consequently resume bookings by January next year. It has already ramped up the production to over a 1000 vehicles each month. Initially this figure hovered at around 500 vehicles.
Many automobile experts believe that Toyota was pressurised to start the bookings of Fortuner due to various SUVs getting launched almost every month. The latest competition came in the form of world’s no. 1 luxury brand BMW which launched its affordable compact SUV X1 for the price of Rs. 22 lakh only.
