Nissan Leaf has just got one more award to its kitty! And this one is big. New York hosted World Car Of The Year (WCOTY) awards ceremony where Nissan Leaf is declared 2011 World Car of the Year! The Green car beat the competition from 2011 Audi A8 and 2011 BMW 5-Series.
The petrol-electric Chevrolet Volt was crowned World Green Car. Nissan Leaf was among the top three contenders for the green car award along with the BMW 320d EfficientDynamics and the 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery powered Chevrolet VOLT that has been in sale in the United Stated since November last year. The Chevrolet Volt ultimately proved to be its biggest trump card in securing the 2011 World Green Car award.
The Aston Martin Rapide has walked away with the top accolades with the World Car Design, created by Britain’s top vehicle designer, Marek Reichman.
The Aston Martin Rapide has managed what other super car manufacturers haven’t, and that is the translation of a two door coupe design on to a four door super sedan platform, while retaining the essence and character of the brand without looking out of place. Despite the longer body and the addition of two more doors, the Rapide carries off the look with elan.
Ferrari 458 Italia managed to shake-off the challenge from Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and the Porsche 911 Turbo to secure the World Performance Car crown.
Vehicles are selected and voted on by an international jury panel comprised of sixty-six top-level automotive journalists. Each juror was appointed by the World Car Steering Committee on the basis of his or her expertise, experience, credibility, and influence. Each juror typically drives and evaluates new vehicles on a regular basis as part of their professional work. Through their respective outlets they collectively reach an audience of many millions world-wide.
