Toyota To Recall 308,000 SUVs In U.S. Due To Airbag Defect

The ghost of  car recall is not ready to come off Toyota’s back. In a fresh incident, the Japanese automobile giant Toyota Motor Corp. on Thursday announced it will recall about 308,000 SUVs in United States to fix problems related to unwanted airbag deployments.

The recall affects about 214,000 RAV4 and 94,000 Toyota Highlander and Highlander HV SUVs sold in the U.S. The voluntary recall covers certain 2007 and 2008 models, all of which will need a new Curtain Shield Airbag Sensor Assembly.

The problems stem from these specific models’ two sensors in the airbag assembly which meant to detect vehicle roll angle, if one sensor malfunctions, the airbag warning light will illuminate and the roll detection system will be suspended, but the airbag would still activate in a side collision, said Toyota.

But, Toyota said that, in cases where two sensors fail at almost the same time, the side curtain airbags designed to protect passengers in a rollover accident could be inflated outside such an accident.

Vehicles equipped with the roll sensing curtain shield airbag system have only been sold in North American market. The Japanese automaker has received reports of some minor injuries caused by the airbag fault, prompting the company to conduct a voluntary recall.
