Yamaha To Launch Scooter In India, Set Up Seperate Assembly Line

Japanese two-wheeler giant Yamaha is planning to launch scooter in Indian market by 2012. The company has confirmed that it will set up separate assembly line for the manufacturing of future scooters. The company’s fully-owned subsidiary, India Yamaha Motor Pvt Ltd, is investing Rs. 10 crore to set up the body assembly line at the plant. According to the source, it may also introduce electric bike in the market.

“The scooter market in India is huge and we want to have a strong presence. Now we are preparing to launch a scooter here within 2012,” India Yamaha Motor Pvt Ltd CEO and Managing Director Hiroyuki Suzuki said.

Asked what kind of scooter it will be, he declined to specify details, but said: “It will be focused more on personal commuting, with stylish and smart design like Yamaha’s motorcycles that are sold here.”

India Yamaha MotorĀ  is eyeing total sales of 5 lakh units of two wheelers in Indian market in the year of 2011. It is also reported to launch India- specific scooters in the domestic market. The company is doing well in bike segment and now it is ready to give answer to Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India, Suzuki and Mahindra which are major scooter providers in Indian market.
