Friday’s showing outgunned both critics and tracking, which suggested the sequel might open lower than the original Cars, which grossed $19.7 million on its opening Friday for a domestic debut of $60.1 million.

Instead, the 3D toon got off to a strong start at the domestic box office, scoring one of the best showings of the year.

Pixar CEO John Lasseter returned to the director’s chair for the first time since Cars to direct Cars 2, which is drawing mixed reviews, unusual for a Pixar title.

The film is set this time not in rural America, but in London, Paris and Tokyo, where Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) travel to compete in the World Grand Prix.
