General Motors India reported an increase of 6.74 per cent in sales for December 2011, while Ford India’s sales reportedly rose by 39 per cent in the same month. GM India sold 9,039 units last month compare to 8,468 units in the same month of the previous year. Ford India managed to sell 5,979 units against 4,301 units sold in the corresponding month of 2010.
In December 2011, General Motors India had sold 1,365 Spark hatchbacks, 486 Cruze sedans and 4,796 units of its latest compact car Beat, the company said in a statement.
It also sold 191 units of entry-level sedan Aveo, 227 units of mid-sized sedan Optra, 1,927 units of multi-utility vehicle Tavera and 47 units of its Captiva SUV.
“We have been able to sustain the growth primarily due to the encouraging response to Chevrolet Beat. Other carlines like Spark, Cruze and Tavera have also generated substantial volumes for the company,” GM India Vice President P Balendran said.
In the 2011 calendar year, GM India sold a total of 1,11,510 units compared to 1,10,804 units a year ago.
Ford India sold 96,270 units in the domestic market in the calendar year 2011, up 15 per cent compared to the previous year.
Michael Boneham, President and Managing Director, Ford India was quoted as saying “It’s incredibly gratifying to see that our domestic sales have grown at such a steady pace, particularly given the challenging market environment. Overall, 2011 was a strong and positive year where we crossed many milestones.”
