If Karnataka Government has its way, the IT city of India, Bangalore, will get country’s cheapest car, Tata Nano, as public transport vehicle. The State Government’s proposal to buy 10000 Tata Nano get passed, the car will replace auto-rickshaws in the city.
Mr R Ashoka, transport minister of the state said on Saturday that there is very little margin in the cost between an autorickshaw and a Nano. The Government is continuously receiving complaints about auto-rickshaws in the cities. And as per the data available their quantity is insufficient for the large number of population of Bangalore.
The State Government also states that the profit from these new car-come-auto-rickshaws will be shared in theĀ 40:60 ratio between drivers and the government, respectively. According to him, this large number of Tata Nano could be purchased by investing money from government’s own resources or it may be done gradually through finance.
The above mentioned proposal has been named as the Akrama-Sakrama scheme, by which government is aiming to help-out 15 lakh families in the state and in return will generate a revenue of Rs 15,000-crore for the exchequer. For the effective implementation of this scheme, the state government will make sure that a single-window system will be set up at local units. Mr Ashoka concluded that the recent proposal (if implemented) will help improve the financial position of the urban local bodies.
